Introduction

Understanding Savings:

  • Definition: Explain savings as putting aside some of your money today to use in the future.
  • Example: Ask pupils how many have saved some of their pocket money.

How to Save Money:

  • Steps to Save: The steps are as follows;
    • Set a goal: Decide what you’re saving for.
    • Budget: Plan how much you’ll save each week or month by setting aside a portion of your allowance or earnings.
    • Use a savings account or piggy bank: Keep your savings separate from your spending money so you’re not tempted to use it.
    • Be consistent: Save regularly, even if it’s just a small amount, and watch your savings grow over time.

Activity: Give each pupil a piece of paper to draw something they want to save for (e.g., a toy, book, or outing).

Practical:

  • Provide small plastic containers (like mini piggy banks) and give pupils mock coins or tokens to practice saving.
  • Let them put the tokens into their “savings” containers. Please encourage them to start their savings at home.

Discussion:

  • Ask the class why they think it’s important to save money.
  • Emphasize how saving can help them buy things they need in the future.

Importance of Savings:

  • Financial Security: This means that you have enough money set aside so you can continue living comfortably when you experience tough times. Explain how saving helps them have money for emergencies or future goals.
  • Building Good Habits: Discuss how learning to save now can help them develop habits that will benefit them as adults.
  • Achieving Goals: Show how saving a little bit each week can lead to achieving bigger goals over time.

Class Activity: Ask pupils to name some goals they might want to save for (e.g., a toy, game, bike) and how saving helps them reach these goals.
